Mosaic Oil (ASX MOS) has awarded BJ Services a contract for the hydraulic fracture stimulation of its Churchie 1 well within the Churchie Field, PL 192, Surat-Bowen Basin, Queensland.
This work is the first stage of a wider program aimed at enhancing the gas rate from the Churchie Field and other tight reservoirs in the Surat-Bowen Basin by fracture stimulation. The consultancy group RPS Energy, with extensive experience stimulating tight gas reservoirs in North America, has already undertaken a review of the field with a view to stimulating existing and new wells to improve gas rate and overall recovery from the field.
The Churchie 1 fracture stimulation job has been designed to propagate and extend a substantial fracture within the Tinowon sand formation. This fracture is designed to extend some 250 metres either side of the wellbore. If the stimulation propagates as planned, a several fold increase in initial stabilised gas rates from pre-fracture rates of under 0.5MMscf/day to post-fracture rates of over 1.5 MMscf/day is anticipated.
Weather permitting, the initial fracture stimulation is expected to commence in March 2010 when all the necessary equipment and materials have been delivered to the well site, and is expected to be completed in approximately two weeks. The subsequent flow back and evaluation of the results should be completed early in the 3Q 2010.
