Today Liberty Resources (ASX: LBY) received a letter of acceptance to become a legal member of the Global Carbon Capture and Storage (“CCS”) Institute. Liberty Resources applied for the membership earlier this year, as part of the company’s initiatives to be in the front line of battle against climate change.

The Global CCS Institute was formally launched in April 2009, receiving a total AUD$100 Million annual government funding, as part of the Rudd Governments AUD$2.4 Billion investment into the development of CCS projects.

Liberty is one of eighty leading corporations, non government bodies and research organisations to apply for a foundation membership.

The Global CCS Institute will coordinate the development and deployment of safe, economic and environmentally sustainable commercial-scale CCS projects.

“The process of Underground Coal Gasification (“UCG”) is the most effective way to deliver renewable energy, whilst also safely storing carbon dioxide deep below ground.” Liberty’s Managing Director Andrew Hawthorpe said. “Integrating CCS techniques with Liberty’s project will produce low cost electricity with zero carbon emissions.”

An independent study by Al Maynard and associates confirmed that Liberty Resources has an exploration target potential between 280Bt and 350Bt (Billion Tonnes) of coal for its Queensland Coal projects.
